Sri Lanka President has appointed a former foreign affairs minister Rohitha Bogollagama as the new Governor of the Eastern Province. Bogollagama fills the vacancy left behind by the former Governor Austin Fernando, who was appointed as the Permanent secretary to the President following the resignation of P.B. Abeykoon after two years at the post. President Sirisena in a Twitter post said Veteran administrator Austin Fernando assumed duties as President's Secretary and he will add great strength to Sri Lanka's public service.

Secretary to Sri Lanka President P. B. Abeykoon tendered his resignation to President Sirisena on 1 July citing personal reasons. Bogollagama, a lawyer by profession, has served as the Cabinet Minister of Foreign Affairs from 28 January 2007 until he was defeated in the General Elections held on 8 April 2010, losing his seat in parliament.
