At least five persons were injured including the Chief Organiser for the opposition United National Party (UNP) in Haputale Senarath Jayasinghe when suspect pro-government goons stormed an election propaganda meeting a short while ago, police said. The incident took place inside the Hindu Cultural Centre Hall in Haputale shortly before the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and UNP Uva provincial councilor Harin Fernando were to attend the meeting.

The goons also forcibly removed election related propaganda material from the meeting venue. Two of the five injured persons have been hospitalized, police said. Mr. Fernando said that the mob had also pelted stones at his vehicle and that of the UNP leader but there was no damage.He alleged that a regional government politician had instigated the attack.
However despite the incident Mr. Wickramesinghe continued with the meeting. The UNP leader along with Mr.Fernando is scheduled to address a series of meetings in the Badulla district today and tomorrow.
